12-Pack Small Hive Beetle Traps — Beekeeping Tools
Product description
What you get: a pack of 12 individual small-hive beetle traps, each molded in white plastic for visibility inside the hive.
Dimensions and material: each trap measures approximately 7.08 x 1.18 x 0.39 inches and is made from rigid plastic. The size is low-profile to sit between frames and across brood boxes without taking much space.
How to use: place the traps where beetles tend to congregate (commonly above brood areas). Many beekeepers pour a shallow level of vegetable or mineral oil into the trough to immobilize captured beetles; a few drops of a citrus or other attractant in the oil can improve catches. The units are described as easy to install and operate for routine inspections. They are multi-purpose for monitoring and reducing small hive beetle populations.
Pros
- Compact, low-profile size fits most hives
- Comes as a 12-piece kit for multiple hives
- Simple to install and use
Cons
- Some units are sealed and not serviceable
- May be slightly wide for very tight-frame setups
- Requires oil or attractant to maximize effectiveness
VerdictA practical, compact option for trapping small hive beetles. The 12-piece kit is easy to fit into most hives and works well when baited with a light oil or attractant. Many users see the best results if traps are placed over brood areas and installed early. Note that some units are sealed and not serviceable, and a few beekeepers report they can be slightly wide for tight-frame hives. Overall effe

Effective when installed early
They work well. I caught several beetles right away, and after that my colony kept numbers down. Glad I put them in early.

Good quantity, easy to check
Nice number of traps in the pack; straightforward to install and inspect during hive checks.

Be patient during treatment
Give them time to work and avoid excessive hive disruption. They perform as expected.

Better fit than some alternatives
A bit fiddly to position, but unlike another brand they sit almost flush and let beetles walk over the lip into the trap. I used canola oil and a splash of apple cider vinegar.

Use oil and place two per hive
Fill the trough partly with vegetable or mineral oil (about a third) and add a drop of citrus oil if desired. Don’t overfill or you risk oil on bees. These are sealed units and not openable, so I’ll switch to reusable traps next season, but they do catch beetles — two over the brood is my recommendation.

Works but may push frames apart
They do the job, but the top width on my set was a bit wide and spread the frames, letting the bees build comb in the gap. A slightly narrower profile would be better.
